The best Pokémon booster box to buy, ranked by value
Updated October 6, 2026 · prices refreshed October 6, 2026
Short answer: at today’s market prices, no Pokémon booster box pays for itself on average. But the gap between sets is huge. The best boxes hand back well over half of their price in cards, while some sealed boxes return less than 20 cents on the dollar. If you are going to buy a box, picking the right set matters more than anything else.
The ranking below is recalculated every day from current market prices, so it is always up to date.

Most of the sets at the bottom are out of print. Their sealed boxes are priced as collectibles, not as packs to open. For example, a sealed Evolving Skies box sells for about $2,280, while the cards in an average box are worth about $302. The difference is what collectors pay to keep the box closed.
How we calculate a box’s value
- Pull rates. For recent sets we use pull rates measured from large pack-opening samples. For older sets we use estimates, because the publisher does not release official odds.
- Card prices. Every card gets its current market price for an ungraded copy, including commons and reverse holos.
- Simulation. We open 1,000 virtual boxes of 36 packs for each set and compare what came out with what the box costs today.
Two things make real results a little worse than the table. You do not get market price when you sell (there are fees and shipping), and bulk commons are hard to sell at all. So treat the numbers as an upper limit.
How to pick a box
If you want the most cards for your money
Pick from the top of the first table, and try to buy at or near retail price. A box that is already close to break-even at market price looks a lot better if you paid less than market for it.
If you are chasing one specific card
Buy the single. A top chase card can take thousands of packs to pull. Umbreon ex from Prismatic Evolutions, for example, sells for about $1,323 as a single. You can see the odds of pulling any card, and what that costs in packs, with the card value checker.
If you are buying an older sealed box
Know that you are buying a collectible. Opening it almost always destroys value on paper, because the sealed price is far above what the cards inside are worth on average.
Special sets marked †
Some popular sets, like Prismatic Evolutions and 151, are not sold in booster boxes. For those we price a “box” as 36 packs at the single-pack price. Buying them in Elite Trainer Boxes or bundles usually costs more per pack.

FAQ
Is a Pokémon booster box worth it?
On average, no booster box returns its price in card value at today's market prices. Some sets lose much less than others, and a lucky box can still come out ahead, so buy a box for the fun of opening it rather than as a way to make money.
Which Pokémon booster box has the best value right now?
The set at the top of the ranking on this page. The ranking is recalculated every day with current market prices, so the leader can change.
How many packs are in a Pokémon booster box?
An English Pokémon booster box holds 36 booster packs. Some special sets are not sold in booster boxes at all, only in Elite Trainer Boxes, bundles and other products.
Are these values for graded cards?
No. All values use market prices for ungraded cards. Grading can add value to a few big hits, but it costs money and not every card comes back with a top grade.
